Algebra Seminar: Lee -- Computing with the sporadic simple groups

Melissa Lee (Monash University) will be speaking in the algebra seminar. We will go out
for lunch after the talk---all are welcome to join!

When: 12-1pm Friday September 5

Where: Carslaw 175

Title: Computing with the sporadic simple groups

Abstract: In this talk I will describe the surprising influence that the discovery and
study of the sporadic simple groups had on developments in computational group theory.
After surveying this intriguing story, which spans over 50 years, I will discuss some
recent work computing in the Monster, the largest sporadic group. The latter is joint
work with Heiko Dietrich, Anthony Pisani and Tomasz Popiel.
