Algebra Seminar

We describe the so-called "minimal basis" for the centre of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. The basis can be defined with respect to a partial order on the positive part of the algebra, an order which is analagous to a similar order on the positive part of the group algebra. The whole approach is entirely combinatorial in nature, and avoids the use of characters or the Tits deformation theorem.
